Biography

The story so far...

AlternativA started out as an E.L.O. - inspired band in 2004, that is, the main influence for the music was E.L.O. but also the Beatles, the Alan Parsons Project and the Travelling Wilburys where important influences. When the the band released their first album with 14 original songs in 2005, they gained a lot of attention and popularity among the E.L.O. fanbase all over the world, much to their surprise and happiness! In late 2005 the single Voyage Of Time was released. In 2008 an EP followed containing 3 tracks which was also well received.

So what's next?...

We came to realize that we wanted to do something new and exciting, something we had never done before. We always loved rock music from the '70-ties, but also modern rock like there is today. We've chosen a new approach by using just guitars, bass, drums and vocals for the new record. That's a big change for us of doing things, because normally we would add a lot of piano and synthesizers to the songs. As a musician and especially as a songwriter you need to change the way you do things every now and then to keep it fun and interesting. That's the reason we chose to make this new record happen in a entirely new way.But we will maintain the most important thing in our music: strong melodies, on which you can easily sing along, and rich arrangements!

Is the band name still appropriate?...

At first we thought that because this is something new and different, we should get a different bandname for this project. After all, people think of '60-ties, '70-ties and '80-ties-like popsongs when they think of AlternativA's music.So we came up with this new name 'Nifo' for the new rockproject. We also held a poll on Facebook to ask our listeners what the new bandname for this rockproject should be.

Much to our surprise almost everyone voted for AlternativA. Later on we listened to the recordings of our rock project and decided that it is just too different to call it AlternativA, so we decided to use Nifo for the rock stuff and AlternativA for the ELO/Beatles inspired stuff.

What about live gigs?...

When we recorded the previous material that we put out so far we realised that doing it live would be next to impossible because of the many orchestrations and instrumentation we used on those records. In order to make it work we would have used 'orchestral tracks' and ohter tracks to play along with us doing our thing live. That would not be live. The thing with live shows is that songs will sound a bit different, worse or better. But that's what makes the songs come to life, that's what makes it interesting and an experience to listen to.This new record from Nifo is perfect for live shows because we only use 'real band-instruments' this time. Our plan is to make a great record and do as many live shows as we can afterwords! But at a later stage, we also plan to perform live with AlternativA's songs, a great challenge!.
